Makalu Base Camp Trekking is known as a remote trek because it visits one of the most remote and infrequently visited by trekkers. The Barun valley is a part of a huge international protected area under the agreement between the governments of Nepal and China, which comprises of 2330 sq. km of National Park and 830 sq. km of conservation area in Nepal alone. The Arun Valley, east of Everest, leading to Makalu Base Camp is least visited by tourists in Nepal. Trek to Makalu can be cut short by taking direct flight to Tumlingtar, a small village located on a plateau. The trek from Tumlingtar at barely 390 m to Makalu Base Camp at 4,800m is a long and arduous as vast range in temperatures is confronted, from steamy in the lowlands to snow storms at high altitude.
Most trekkers and mountaineers visit the Makalu-Barun area during October-November and March-April when high passes are less likely to be snowed over. Lower elevations are temperate throughout winter and hot during April and May. Heavy monsoon rains occur throughout the region from June through September, with occasional showers during April-May.
