The Everest Base Camp trek, a very well known mountain trek, starts at Lukla following the upper Phakding and the Dudh Kosi valley trail which climbs up to the Sherpa capital of Namche, a bustling bazaar that is a junction for trekkers, the local Sherpa and expeditions en route to the mighty Mt. Everest. All along this part of the trail, villages are interspersed with magnificent forests of rhododendron, magnolia and giant firs. In both the early autumn and late spring, the flowers on this portion of the trek make it the kind of walk you will remember for a long, long time.
Base Camp and Kalar Pathar:
The dramatic landscape around you changes as you continue to climb higher and higher. By the time you reach Lobuche, the temperature has dropped and you will be walking among frozen rivers in an icy wilderness. From here you make the trek to base camp itself in its dramatic location at the foot of the world's highest peak. The next day it's on to the final highlight-Kalar Patar (5545m), with stunning views of Everest and the Khumbu Glacier cascading below. From here you descend to Lukla, marvelling at what you have achieved and all the while with stunning views and fantastic scenery all around you!
Get In the Everest Trekking Region:
Fly to Lukla Airport from Kathmandu domestic Airport. There are several Airlines operating dozens of flights everyday. The flight takes around 25 minutes. During the summer rainy season, there may be substantial delays of flights .For the return journey; the flights leave Lukla at 7:40AM and 9AM. Helicopter Charter service is also available on demand and mostly used for rescue operation.
Alternatives are to fly to Phaplu airport, 2-3 trekking days south of Lukla, or to walk in from Jiri, which is 5-7 trekking days west of Lukla. These alternatives take more time and therefore are less popular, but are very peaceful and pleasant - and much safer than flying into Lukla.
High Altitude sickness:
It affects even young and healthy people and is a genuine problem in Khumbu. If you feel dizzy, suffer palpitations or severe headaches, return immediately to lower altitude. Do not take altitude sickness lightly. It can and does kill!
